Character Art

Comic Production Art

Overview

This piece served as a production art that ultimately influenced the nearly final appearance of my upcoming graphic novel.

Skills/Methods

In my story, I had to envision the appearance of this character at a young age and also determine the visual style for the book. I utilized animation techniques, using a 4-layering technique system to bring this character to life. I also carefully thought about the right colors and showed the martial arts style that was referenced.

Outcome

Although the production art was only intended for a brief scene, its style was the primary factor in its success. By meeting all the visual and temporal requirements, this piece played a crucial role in setting the tone for the rest of the book's production.

Concept Art and 2-D Turnaround

Overview

I was responsible for developing the main character for an upcoming independent video game. As part of this process, the client required a fully realized design that could be built and viewed from all angles.

Skills/Methods

To create the piece, I had to have a thorough understanding of the protagonist's backstory, which was given to me by the client. The character's strong connection to mysticism greatly influenced their design. It was important for me to understand their identity as a nomadic soldier, also. The entire piece was made using clip studio paint, with the character being initially drawn in a 2D turn-around. When working on the project, I utilized both the grid system and realistic design elements to ensure precise alignment and convincing movement for the nomadic character.

Outcome

I successfully created a character design that not only fulfills all of the client's requirements, but also has a distinctive silhouette that is crucial for gaming, especially when viewed from different angles. Furthermore, this design will be used as a reference for another artist to create a 3D version, so having all sides drawn enables the digital artist to fully rely on the provided concepts.

Samurai Aladdin

Overview

I created a design of the well-known Disney character, envisioning them as a samurai. My goal was to make the character more relatable to audiences by incorporating a familiar art style.

Skills/Methods

In my exploration of Aladdin, I made a conscious effort to preserve his usual portrayal to effectively engage with the audience. Moreover, I strived to imitate the characteristic art style often seen in VHS or home videos, with its airbrushed hues and blending techniques. To capture the essence of the samurai Aladdin, I drew him using pencil and rendered him using Photoshop.

Outcome

It was hard to think of a favorite character and make sure that any of the things that made them loved or recognizable wouldn't be lost. However, the audience liked the result because it showed cleverness and originality with the character.

Chuckie from Rugrats

Overview

My goal for this project was to illustrate a popular cartoon character in the style of a coloring book drawing.

Skills/Methods

The original drawing was created by hand using ballpoint ink. It was then drawn again in Adobe Illustrator. They made sure it matched the rules of a coloring book, with thick and consistent lines. The color scheme was accurately captured from the animated series to fully capture its likeness.

Outcome

The assignment successfully captured the overall aesthetics and portrayed the animated character in a coloring book, as it was intended for student work.

Snoopy

Overview

The main objective of this project was to produce a component that would complement a larger work, while also emulating the style of the original artist.

Skills/Methods

When creating Snoopy, my main goal was to capture his simplistic and accurate appearance as seen in the comics. While studying the artist's style, I noticed their use of free-form lines. I wanted to make sure that my recreation reflected this style while also showing Snoopy's unique attitude. I achieved this by drawing the character freehand in Clip Studio Paint.

Outcome

This piece stood out because it was an important asset for a larger project and it perfectly embodied the artist's unique style, from the intricate line work to the vibrant color scheme in the final product.
